Maybe you can do some sort of light "background color" . . . . . . and match that with your overall color scheme.
You can eliminate the "dashed hyphens" . . . . . (although we can leave those in the docx file).

It would be nice if you could select five or six "typestyles" and then you could alternate with those in formatting the text.
You can see in this docx file that I have used a number of different typestyles in order to emphasize various points I am making, and to "separate" the effect of the content of the different paragraphs.
