Letter from Sidney Chen

Mr. Wang:

Like you, establishing the Formosa Republic is my life-time and not-yet-realized dream. Interestingly, both you and I are in the same generation, baby boomers, and you are a little older than I. We both grew up in the same town, I believe.

If what you said is true, "The sovereignty belongs to the Taiwan people since the San Francisco Peace Treaty (SFPT) came into force", then since the 1952 SFPT, why were the Taiwan people under martial law for 38 years? What impacts or determines Taiwan's fate so far, are (a) Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), (b) three communiques (between US and China), and (c) the One China Policy. Which one was drafted by consulting Taiwan people like you and me? Who and what protects us from China's never-ending ambition of annexing Taiwan? The answer is -- the USA under the TRA and the US-Japan Mutual Defense arrangements, which include the Taiwan Strait as their peripheral defense region. Who made remarks about Taiwan not being a state and the ROC being an issue pending resolution . . . ?? That is the USA! Did you see anybody in the world disagree with that statement?? None did, including China!!

From the outcome of the last two major elections in Taiwan, the world has determined that the Taiwanese people do not have the desire for Taiwan Independence because they gave a pro-unification party with China as part of its name the absolute power to do anything deemed legal, including constitutional amendment. That is the reality of the international society, by judging from the popular election result. But how much do the international society know about the fact that the democracy of Taiwan is not based on a very important principle or spirit -- which is fairness? They don't care and can do nothing about it.

If all the polls show 70% of the Taiwanese people choose indpendence over 10% choosing unification, then why do the results of the elections never reflect that? The record of the white terror, 228 slaughter, social injustice, and KMT-party property are no longer KMT's liability. The bottom line for the Taiwan people is they don't deem there is a solution there . . . . and unfortunately, the Taiwan people do not have the will or balls or vision to make the sarifice for their promising land. They may ride the wave of the opportunity, like the true opportunists! If you have the chance to study Japan's Meijin Ishin history, you may better understand what elements are missing in Taiwan peoples' blood. Maybe I will offend you to say that Taiwan people are too much polluted by Chinese culture, including the former President Chen Shui-Bien!

If the Taiwan people are given an opportunity to openly, fairly discusss the issues related to our fate and the solution or rights they should have, their will and desire may have the chance to be fairly expressed. To have that environment, we have to disarm and disband the Bandit group, the KMT. Who holds the key and the capability to disband that bandit? That is the USA under the SFPT. As long as the SFPT is honored and the exiled ROC regime is terminated, the KMT can no longer exist. That is the rule of the game and the right we should have. Up to now however we have been betrayed.

There is a great opportunity for us, that will not only educate the Taiwan people as to what we deserve but also to demand that the USA give us what we deserve. That is the upcoming Oral Argument in the case of Roger Lin et. al. v. USA, on Feb. 5, 2009, in Washington DC. I suggest that you use your energy and effort to rally the Taiwan people either to go to DC on Feb. 5, 2009, or to go to AIT in Taipei to support this historical event. As an old Chinese slang said, "untying the ring lies on the hand of whoever tied the ring!"

Merry Christmas
